I'm doing my best to release KompoZer 0.8b1 before the MozCamp ’09.
Some interesting features have been implemented for this release:
- the FTP support is getting better: KompoZer 0.8b1 is able to upload any file, and creates subfolders properly
- KompoZer 0.8b1 can finally open PHP files on Linux. Vingtetun, I owe you one for this!
- side effect: KompoZer 0.8 will probably be able to edit text files (PHP, JavaScript, CSS, htaccess…)
- the split view has been improved
GNU/Linux i686 users, you can try the latest nightly here and report bugs here. This version should be pretty close to the official 0.8b1 release but it still needs to be tested: it's not the official 0.8b1 release, it's just a snapshot.
The MacOS X and Windows versions are on their way. L10n contributors, get ready! :-)
EDIT (2009-09-30 15:15 GMT):
- the download link on kompozer.net was a bad idea: I got a bandwidth alert, and kompozer.net might be down for a few hours. This file has been moved to SourceForge.net.
- I'm not sure to have the time to release the official 0.8b1 before the MozCamp. Worst case, the binaries will be available next week.

Any word on better template implementation? My two concerns right now are:
1) Editable regions are not the only editable regions. Changes to locked areas can still be done.
2) There's no way to update the pages built off a template without using a third-party software.

@jackburnt: in the current state, templates don't work at all. The first point you mention is a regression of KompoZer 0.8 that I have to fix; but as you noticed, these templates are useless as long as we can't update HTML pages when the template is modified: that's why this regression is not a priority for me.
I'd love to have a decent template management in KompoZer, but it'd require a significant amount of work — and as you can guess, I don't have much time for this at the moment. However, there are two features that might be worth working on:
I've already spent some time on those "smart widgets" and the CSS-based layout management. I think these two features together would bring us most of the benefits of a real template system with less work — but again, I have to focus on bugfixing at the moment. If somebody has experience in XUL and is willing to implement these features as extensions, feel free to ping me on #kompozer or by e-mail.

I LOVE Kompozer, and don't know how I would update my site without it.
If I had a couple of wishes they would be for
1) line numbers in source mode:
2) when I right-click- 'link properties' - click on folder icon to choose file, the sub window which opens should default to file types 'all files' or at least to selection made last, and NOT just default to html.
3) when switching from design view to source view the cursor stays on the line of code you were working on rather than default to the top of the page.
I know I'm just being picky, really and I do appreciate the hard work that goes into each revision.

Just think if every person who download KompoZer contributed only one euro (equal to about $1.5) how much would be available to make Kompozer the absolute best web tool out there.

Any new strings that need translation since 0.8 alpha4?
Am using 0.7.10 Kompozer in Linux Mint (Gloria, based upon Ubuntu 9.04) and also in Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). It's great -- thanks much for your efforts.
However, I get crashes in Mint and have a broken package in Ubuntu 8.04 , which I understand would both be corrected by changing to Kompozer 0.8x. Sorry for my ignroance, but what's the best way to get a Debian package? (I've tried using Alien with the rpm package -- but no luck yet.)

Oh yes, this is great. . . I can't wait till someone builds a windows version. I am tempted to get a compiler just to try the snapshot version
CSS should be more seamless. It seems like .8 already has a better CSS implementation (I was able to point and click to create a style)
Now we just need a way to use DIV's via Point and click WYSIWYG, and a split screen so you can see the stylesheet options of the current style sheet (on the right?). if there is no style sheet, edit normally, then export stylesheet. It seems to be hard to start creating a stylesheet if you don't have the page created yet, and if you can't export it, it is something you just put off.
I see there is now a "generic container (div)" option in the pull down styles box, but I am thinking that it should have a wiget pop up to walk you through.... almost force you to use CSS. This goes for creating a page too.... or like I say if the CSS pane is to the right and you change a style, just pop up saying do you want to save this style?
Just some thoughts to get the CSS use off the ground.

I completely agree on you on the fact we need a good “New Page” assistant to create a CSS-based layout. We'd also need a specific dialog box for <div> containers, as well as a <span> button on the toolbar for those who want to avoid the tag soup of the second format toolbar. I still hope somebody will jump in and propose to implement that in an extension: this would be easy for a XUL developer, and that would be a good first extension for somebody who'd like to learn Mozilla technologies.
Having a sidebar for the CSS editor would require more work, I think I'll rather enhance the DOM Explorer sidebar instead. However: at the moment I have to focus on the bugfixes.
Someone earlier mentioned a "broken package" problem with Ubuntu. This happens when adding the PPA to the third-party repository list. The way to correct this is to open Synaptic and *completely remove* Kompozer. Once done, go ahead and install it again from within Synaptic. It will install correctly.
The way to avoid this in the first place is to completely remove the earlier version of Kompozer before adding the PPA to your list. Then go into Synaptic and install as if new, or issue "sudo apt-get install kompozer" from terminal.
I hope there's a stable release soon, it's a great tool but in Fedora 11 not dependable....yet. Stay the course Kaze, this is going to be a winner at first looks very nicely done.

I will say that KompoZer has it going on. Currently, I'm using a trial of another program until it runs out, but Kompozer's is going to be my main man when it comes to actually designing my site (obviously when my trial runs out).
Can't wait to see the changes coming.
